After much faffing around, implementation switching, optimisation,
etc. it's now taking 3m40s to reduce the whole lot on my Thinkpad.
This number is similar to the best I've seen before, so I think that's
about the limit of what we'll get from Racket.
This number is acceptable for current purposes, so I'm closing this
issue.
